The Welsh placenames of Wrexham

The name Wrexham itself may have its roots in Anglo-Saxon; essentially a form of Rick’s Meadow, but there are plenty of Welsh-language names that Eisteddfod Wrecsam can help put on the map!

Wrexham Council are promoting the Welsh-language names of the city in time for the Eisteddfod, which will see the launch of a campaign to add those names to our country’s maps with Mapio.Cymru .

Cyngor Wrecsam will be working with Welsh-language map specialists Mapio Cymru to support their efforts to have every Welsh place name on their maps.

Do you know a Welsh name from the Wrexham area that’s not on the map? Let them know…

This Friday, Mapio Cymru will be presenting a workshop on how to add Welsh-language names to the official online map of Wales near the Wrexham stall at the National Eisteddfod, 11am-1pm.  Look out for Cyngor Wrecsam on the Eisteddfod map!

The Mapio Cymru team have produced a Welsh-language version of OpenStreetMap, openstreetmap.cymru .  Sponsored by the Welsh Government #Cymraeg2050 initiative to have a million daily users of the Welsh language in Wales by 2050, their work is now included in Data Map Wales, the official online map of Wales.
